Belgium Industrial Production at 9.80 percent


Belgian industrial production surged 9.8 percent year-on-year in December 2016, accelerating from a downwardly revised 1.3 percent rise in the previous month. It is the strongest growth since August last year, as manufacturing jumped (11.4 percent vs 1.2 percent in November) and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning grew more (1.6 percent vs 1.2 percent) while mining and quarrying increased at a slower pace (9.8 percent vs 17.4 percent). By contrast, water collection, treatment and distribution contracted 3.8 percent (from -2.6 percent in prior month). On a monthly basis, industrial output rose 0.9 percent after an upwardly revised 0.8 percent gain in November.

Belgian business confidence went down to -1.1 in February of 2017 from 0.5 in the previous month, missing market expectations of 0.8. It was the first fall in business confidence since August of 2016, as confidence among manufacturers deteriorated sharply (-4.1 compared to -1.4 in January). By contrast, the morale improved slightly among traders (-6.1 from -7.1 in January), constructors (-1.7 from -2.2) and business-related service providers (14.1 from 14).
