Bulgaria recorded a current account deficit of €494.1 million in December of 2016, compared to a €281.2 million gap a year earlier. The primary income gap rose significantly by €204.9 million to a €342.1 million gap, secondary income surplus narrowed €67 million to €43.9 million and services surplus reduced by €72.3 million to €23.6 million. By contrast, the goods shortfall decreased by €131.2 million to €219.5 million. Considering full 2016, Bulgaria recorded a €1809.6 million surplus, equivalent to 3.9 percent of the GDP, higher than a € 172.4 million surplus (0.4 percent of GDP) a year earlier.

The Bulgarian GDP advanced 0.9 percent on a quarterly basis in the three months to December 2016, following 0.7 percent expansion in the previous period, flash estimates showed. Final consumption advanced further (1.3 percent from 0.5 percent in Q3) and gross fixed capital formation rebounded (+1.2 percent from -0.9 percent). In contrast, imports rose at a faster pace (3.9 percent from 2.7 percent) while exports increased less (2.6 percent from 3 percent). Year-on-year, the GDP advanced 3.4 percent, the same as in the previous period.

Considering 2016 whole year, the trade deficit shrank to BGN 2.46 billion from BGN 4.06 billion in 2015, as exports grew 2.6 percent and imports declined 0.9 percent.

Bulgaria's construction output dropped by 9.7 percent year-on-year in December 2016, following an upwardly revised 4.1 percent decline in the previous month. It was the fourteenth consecutive month of decrease, as output fell further for civil engineering (-16.5 percent from -6.2 percent in November) and building activity (-3.1 percent from -2.2 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, construction output contracted by 2.1 percent after rising by 4.4 percent in November.

Bulgaria Industrial Production at 6.90 percent  
Bulgaria's industrial production rose 6.9 percent year-on-year in December 2016, following a downwardly revised 3.8 percent gain in the previous month. It was the sharpest increase since May 2014, as output rose at a faster pace for manufacturing (9.6 percent from 4.3 percent in November), namely in basic metals (+26.4 percent), computer, electronic and optical products (+20.3 percent) and machinery and equipment (+20.2 percent). Meanwhile, mining and quarrying increased at a slower 2.5 percent (from 9.8 percent in November) and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply fell 0.3 percent (from 0.5 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output jumped 2.1 percent after rising by 1.8 percent in the previous month.
