The Bulgarian economy grew 0.7 percent quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter of 2016, compared to a 0.9 expansion in the previous period and below flash estimates of 0.8 percent gain. Final consumption rose 0.5 percent, the same as in the previous period and net external demand continued to contribute negatively, as exports rose 3 percent (+1.4 percent in Q2) while imports increased 2.7 percent (+0.5 percent in Q2). Meantime, fixed investment contracted less than in the previous period (-0.9 percent compared to -1.4 percent in Q2). Year-on-year, the GDP advanced 3.4 percent, following a 3.6 expansion in the previous quarter.

Bulgaria’s gross domestic product expanded 3.4 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2016 easing from a 3.6 percent growth in the previous period and below flash estimates of 3.5 percent. Final consumption rose at slower pace (+0.2 percent from +1.2 percent in Q2) and net external demand continued to contribute negatively, despite a sharp rise in both exports (+9.5 percent from +4.5 percent in Q2) and imports (+7.5 percent from +2.8 percent in Q2). By contrast, fixed investment declined 1.8 percent (from -0.1 percent in Q2). On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the GDP expanded 0.7 percent, compared to 0.9 growth in the previous quarter.

Exports jumped 11.6 percent, as sales to EU countries climbed 14.4 percent and those to non-EU rose 5.6 percent. Imports advanced at a much slower 1.3 percent, as purchases from EU and non-EU countries grew 1.7 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. In the first nine months of the year, the trade deficit shrank to BGN 1.30 billion from BGN 2.31 billion the same period of 2015, as exports fell 0.5 percent and imports declined 3.2 percent.

Considering the first nine months of 2016, Bulgaria recorded a EUR 2133 million surplus, equivalent to 4.7 percent of the GDP, higher than a EUR 954.6 million surplus (2.1 percent of GDP) a year earlier.

The consumers’ opinions about the development of the general economic situation over the last 12 months as well the expectations about the next 12 months have slightly deteriorated; the change of consumer prices over the last 12 months were more unfavourable, as the inflation expectations for the next 12 months were also preserved; the unemployment was expected to increase over the next 12 months; and the present situation to save money remained negative. However, households’ assessment of the financial situation over the last 12 months and the next 12 months was more positive and intentions as regards making expenditures on ‘home improvements’ over the next 12 months increased.
