Bulgaria recorded a trade deficit of BGN 241.8 million compared to a BGN 640.8 million gap a year earlier, as exports rose more than imports. Exports jumped 14.6 percent to BGN 4230.3 million as sales to non-EU countries increased 18.4 percent and those to the EU grew 12.8 percent. Meantime, imports increased at a slower 3.2 percent to BGN 4472.1 million as purchases from non-EU and EU countries rose by 7 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively. Main export partners were Turkey, China, Serbia, Macedonia, Russia and United States and main import partners were Russia, Turkey, China and Ukraine. In the first eleven months of the year, the trade deficit shrank to BGN 2039.5 million from BGN 3441.0 million in the same period of 2015, as exports grew 1.5 percent and imports declined 1.7 percent.

Bulgaria's construction output dropped by 3.5 percent yer-on-year in November of 2016, easing from a 14 percent decline in the previous month. It was the thirteenth consecutive month of decrease, as output fell for building construction (-1.4 percent from -14.6 percent in October) and civil engineering (-5.9 percent from -13.3 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, construction output rose 4.7 percent following a 1 percent decrease in October.

Consumer confidence in Bulgaria decreased to -27.9 in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to -27.5 in the previous period. The consumers’ opinions about the development of the general economic situation over the last 12 months as well the expectations about the next 12 months have slightly deteriorated; the change of consumer prices over the last 12 months were more unfavourable, as the inflation expectations for the next 12 months were also preserved; the unemployment was expected to increase over the next 12 months; and the present situation to save money remained negative. However, households’ assessment of the financial situation over the last 12 months and the next 12 months was more positive and intentions as regards making expenditures on ‘home improvements’ over the next 12 months increased.
