Consumer prices in Bulgaria increased 1.7 percent year-on-year in February of 2017, following a 1.4 percent rise in the previous month. It is the highest inflation rate since June of 2013, mainly driven by prices of housing and utilities (1.3 percent vs 0.9 percent in January), transport (6 percent vs 2.2 percent) and restaurants and hotels (2 percent, the same pace as in January). Meantime, prices increased at a slower pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.7 percent vs 4 percent) and alcoholic beverages (1.9 percent vs 2.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat compared to a 1.3 percent increase in January.

Bulgaria's industrial production decreased 1.2 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a downwardly revised 5.8 percent gain in the previous month. It is the first drop since May of 2016 and the sharpest since August 2014 as output went down for manufacturing (-3.7 percent from +7.8 percent in December of 2016), namely metal products, except machinery and equipment (-37.1 percent), tobacco (-27.2 percent), wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture (-19.4 percent) and beverages (-17.5 percent). In addition, production fell for mining and quarrying (-2.8 percent from +5.3 percent) while recovered for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (+6.9 percent from -0.1 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output contracted 3.9 percent after rising by 1.7 percent in the previous month.

Bulgaria's construction output fell by 10.3 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following an upwardly revised 10.9 percent decline in the previous month. It was the fifteenth consecutive decrease but the smallest since December of 2015, as output declined less for civil engineering (-13.5 percent from -16.9 percent in December of 2016). In contrast, output for building activity decreased further (-7.5 percent from -3.1 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, construction output contracted 0.6 percent after 0.1 percent drop in the previous month.

Retail trade in Bulgaria increased 4 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, compared to a downwardly revised 2.4 percent rise in the previous month. Sales went up faster for computers, peripheral units and software, telecommunications equipment (24 percent vs 9 percent in December); via mail order houses or via Internet (22 percent vs 7.7 percent); dispensing chemist and similar products (12.1 percent vs 7.4 percent) and other cultural and recreation goods (8.6 percent vs 4.2 percent). In addition, sales rebounded for textiles, clothing, footwear and leather products (11.3 percent vs -2.3 percent). In contrast, sales of food,beverages and tobacco rose at a slower pace (4 percent vs 8 percent) and those of automotive fuel (-9 percent vs -7.8 percent) and audio and video equipment, hardware and similar (-4.1 percent vs 0.5 percent) declined. On a monthly basis, retail trade went up 0.5 percent, after a downwardly revised flat reading in December.

Final consumption advanced 0.8 percent (from 0.2 percent in Q3). In contrast, exports eased (6.8 percent vs 9.5 percent in Q3), imports rose less (5.5 percent vs 7.5 percent) and gross fixed capital formation fell sharply (-4.5 percent vs -1.8 percent). On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.9 percent compared to a 0.7 percent expansion in the September quarter and matching the preliminary estimate.

The Bulgarian GDP advanced 0.9 percent on the quarter in the last three months of 2016, accelerating from a 0.7 percent expansion in the previous period and matching preliminary estimates, final figures showed. Final consumption was the main driver of growth and increased at a faster 1.3 percent (0.5 percent in Q3). In contrast, exports slowed (0.5 percent vs 3 percent), imports rose less (1.7 percent vs 2.7 percent) and gross fixed capital formation declined further (-1.8 percent vs -0.9 percent). Year-on-year, the GDP advanced 3.4 percent, the same as in the previous period. Considering 2016, the Bulgarian economy expanded 3.4 percent compared to a 3 percent growth in 2015.
