Consumer prices in Cyprus went down 0.3 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, following a 1.4 percent fall in the previous month. It was the 42nd straight month of deflation but the lowest since July. Cost fell at a slower pace for transport (-1.4 percent from to -2.9 percent in November) while prices jumped for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.7 percent from -3.4 percent) and for housing and utilities (+1.8 percent compared to -0.8). Additional downward pressure came from: clothing and footwear (-3.3 percent from -3 percent), furnishing and equipment (-2.1 percent from -1.7 percent) and communication (-1.4 percent from -0.5 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.45 percent, compared with 0.1 percent decline in November.

Also, electricity supply rebounded (+3.9 percent from -3 percent in September), and output continued to rise for mining and quarrying (+26 percent from +37.3 percent) and water supply and materials recovery (+23.3 percent from +21.9 percent).

On a quarterly basis, the economy advanced 0.7 percent, compared to 0.9 percent growth in the prior period.
