Czech Republic Producer Prices Change at 3.20 percent  
Producer prices in Czech Republic rose 3.2 year-on-year in April of 2017, following a 3 percent increase in March and above market expectations of a 2.9 percent. It was the highest producer inflation since February 2012, mainly driven by higher cost of coke and refined petroleum products. Upward pressure came from: mining and quarrying (6.4 percent from 6.2 percent); manufacturing (4 percent from 3.8 percent), mainly food products, beverages, tobacco (2.6 percent from 1.5 percent), basic metals and fabricated metal products (7.9 percent from 6.1 percent) and machinery and equipment (1.5 percent from 0.9 percent). In contrast, prices went down for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (-1.4 percent from -1.2 percent) and transport equipment (-1.1 percent from -0.8 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.3 percent.

The Czech National Bank held its two-week repo rate at a record low of 0.05 percent on March 30th, as widely expected. The discount rate and the Lombard rate were also left unchanged at 0.05 percent and 0.25 percent, respectively. In April, the central bank decided to discontinue the use of the exchange rate as an additional instrument for easing the monetary conditions returned to the conventional monetary policy regime, in which interest rates are the main instrument. Industrial production in Czech Republic increased 10.9 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, following a 2.7 percent rise in February and beating market expectations of 9.5 percent. It is the biggest gain since May of 2011, driven by a 13.1 percent jump in manufacturing (2.2 percent in February), namely manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (18.4 percent); fabricated metal products (13 percent) and rubber and plastic products (16.7 percent). In contrast, declines were recorded in manufacture of other transport equipment (-11.7 percent) and repair and installation of machinery and equipment (-7.2 percent). Additional drops were seen in mining and quarrying (-0.2 percent vs 2.1 percent in February) and utilities (-1.3 percent vs 6 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output went down 0.4 percent. Considering the first quarter of the year, production rose 8 percent over a year earlier and 3.5 percent compared with the previous three months.

Czech consumer prices increased 2.0 percent year-on-year in April 2017, following a 2.6 percent gain in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since December 2016, as cost rose at a slower pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.6 percent from 4.4 percent in February) and transport (5.5 percent from 6.3 percent).Additional upward pressure came from recreation and culture (0.9 percent from 0.8 percent). Inflation was steady for housing and utilities (0.9 percent). Meanwhile, prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco fell (-0.1 percent from 3.4 percent) and furnishings and household equipment was flat (from -0.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat, the same as in February and below market expectation of 0.3 percent rise.

It is the biggest increase since August of 2015, boosted by building construction (6.4 percent vs -0.2 percent in February) and civil engineering work (5.5 percent vs -28.7 percent). It is important to note that March 2017 had two more working days than March 2016. On a monthly basis, construction output increased 1.9 percent. Considering the first three months of the year, construction edged down 0.1 percent year-on-year but rose 0.2 percent over the previous quarter.
