Czech Republic GDP Growth Rate at 0.20 percent  
The Czech Republic economy advanced 0.2 percent on quarter in the last three months of 2016, the same as in the previous period but well below market expectations of a 0.6 percent expansion. Household spending and external demand were the main drivers of growth, preliminary estimates showed. On the production side, growth was mainly supported mainly by manufacturing. Year-on-year, the economy advanced 1.7 percent, lower than 1.9 percent in the previous quarter and forecasts of 2.3 percent. Considering full 2016, the GDP grew 2.3 percent, below the central bank's forecast of 2.4 percent. Domestic and external demand was favorable for most industries, especially for manufacturing. In contrast, construction shrank.

Czech consumer prices increased by 2.2 percent year-on-year in January 2017, following a 2 percent gain in the previous month and beating market expectations of a 2.1 percent rise. It was the highest inflation rate since December 2012, as cost rose at a faster pace for: Housing and utilities (0.8 percent from 0.7 percent in December); food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.5 percent from 3.3 percent); and transport (5.1 percent from 2.5 percent). Meanwhile, prices of furnishings and household equipment fell at a slower pace (-0.5 percent from -1.2 percent in December). On a monthly basis, consumer prices jumped by 0.8 percent after rising by 0.3 percent in December and above expectations of a 0.7 percent gain.

Czech industrial output rose by 2.7 percent year-on-year in December 2016, easing from a 7 percent rise in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 5.5 percent rise. Manufacturing went up by 2.9 percent after increasing by 7.9 percent in November, as output rose at a slower pace for chemicals (16 percent from 17.4 percent in November), rubber and plastic products (8 percent from 9.7 percent) and electrical equipment (4.7 percent from 5.2 percent); while production fell for machinery and equipment (-4.3 percent from 5.8 percent) and food products (-5.1 percent from -0.7 percent). Meanwhile, mining and quarrying contracted by 26.5 percent (from -6.7 percent in November) while electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply grew by 10.1 percent (from 5.4 percent). Considering the full year of 2016, industrial output rose by 2.9 percent after expanding by 4.6 percent in 2015.
