It was the first rise in consumer prices since September of 2016 as prices rose faster for clothing and footwear (9.6 percent from 8.4 percent in December of 2016) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (5 percent from 4.3 percent). Additional upward pressure came from: education (5.6 percent from 5.2 percent), health (18.6 percent from 23 percent) and culture and recreation (2.3 percent from 3.5 percent). Cost fell at a slower pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (-3.6 percent from -5 percent), transport (-2.2 percent from 4.8 percent) and housing and utilities (-4 percent from -4.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1 percent, at the same pace as in the previous month.

The National Bank of the Kyrgyzstan lowered its key interest rate by 50 basis points to 5.0 percent at its December meeting. The decision was taken following a similar reduction in the prior month. Policymakers viewed overall prices level in the country continued to decline and the inflationary risks remained low. In November 2016, consumer prices fell 0.5 percent, following a 0.2 percent drop in a month earlier and marking the third straight month of decrease. In the medium term, inflation is expected to return to its target level of 5 to 7 percent.
