Consumer prices in Macedonia increased 0.6 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a 0.2 percent fall in the previous month. It is the highest inflation rate since February of 2014 and after two straight months of deflation, driven by cost of transport (6.3 percent vs 1.4 percent in December); clothing and footwear (2.2 percent vs 1.2 percent); restaurants and hotels (2 percent vs 1.6 percent); furniture and household equipment (1.7 percent vs 3.5 percent) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (4.6 percent vs 4.8 percent). Meantime, prices fell at slower pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (-1 percent vs -1.6 percent) and housing (-0.2 percent vs -0.5 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.6 percent compared to a 0.1 percent drop in December.
