The central bank of Namibia kept its benchmark repo rate on hold at 7 percent at its December 2016 meeting, saying current policy stance is appropriate to support growth. The economy contracted 1.2 percent in the second quarter of the year and the central bank expects it to slow to 2.5 percent in 2016 from 5.3 percent in 2015. Meanwhile, the inflation rate rose to 7.3 percent in November, the highest since November of 2011 and is expected to average 6.7 percent this year and 5.9 percent in 2017.

Namibia's annual inflation rose to 7.3 percent in October of 2016 from 6.9 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since November of 2011, mostly boosted by transport prices (+3.6 percent from +3.3 percent). Other main upward pressure came form food and non-alcoholic beverages (+11.7 percent from +12 percent in September); housing and utilities (+7.8 percent from +8 percent); furnishings and household equipment (+7.9 percent from +6.1 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (+6 percent from +5.7 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.5 percent.
