The Dutch trade surplus narrowed to a provisional €3.5 billion in April from a revised €5.0 billion in March as exports edged down to €34.6 billion from €37.5 in March and €35.2 billion in April of 2012.

Netherlands' Inflation Rate Up to 2.8% in May  
Inflation rose in May to 2.8 percent from 2.6 percent in April. The rise in inflation was mainly due to the increase in energy prices, according to data published by the national Statistics Institute.

Netherlands' trade surplus rose to € 4.94B from € 4.29B a year earlier. The volume of exports of goods grew by 1.9 percent in March relative to twelve months previously. However, export growth was not this low since August 2012. The volume of imports increased by 0.5 percent in March, the lowest growth rate in over a year.

Dutch Economy Shows no Signs of Rebound  
In the second quarter of 2013, Dutch GDP fell for the fourth consecutive quarter dragged down by business investment and private consumption, and is likely contract further amid deteriorating domestic conditions. Indeed, tight austerity measures, adopted in the wake of its housing-market collapse, have damaged the job market and household consumption plunging both consumer and business confidence.

Dutch Economy Remains in Recession in Q1  
According to the first estimate conducted by Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch economy contracted 0.1 percent in the first quarter of 2013 relative to the fourth quarter of 2012. For the third consecutive quarter, the economy is in decline. In the preceding quarters the economy shrank by 1.0 and 0.4 percent respectively. The contraction relative to the first quarter of 2012 was 1.7 percent.

Netherlands Inflation Rate Down to 2.6% In April  
The Dutch inflation rate fell substantially in April to 2.6 percent, reaching the lowest level over the past six months. In March consumer prices were on average 2.9 percent up from one year previously, according to the most recent figures released by Statistics Netherlands.

Recent updates for the Dutch economy show further deterioration of the economic conditions. In the fourth quarter of 2012, the GDP contracted 0.4 percent over the previous quarter and 1.2 percent from a year earlier, confirming the country was in recession. Moreover, the country’s exposure to the sovereign debt crisis continues to be visible as the debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to peak at 77 percent for 2012. Also, the VAT increase, falling real estate prices and a soaring unemployment rate placed consumer confidence near all-time lows in the past few months. As for the supply side, business confidence has been weak for the last two years and industrial production contracted in the first three months of the year, remaining still beyond sustainable recovery.

Netherlands Unemployment Rate Up to 8.1% in March  
Unemployment rose further in the Netherlands in March, to 8.1 percent. According to figures released by Statistics Netherlands, seasonally adjusted unemployment rose by 30 thousand in March, to 643 thousand people. Three months previously, 7.2 percent of the labour force were out of work. In the first quarter of 2013, another 24 thousand people per month became unemployed.

Netherlands' trade surplus rose to € 3.79B from € 2.88B a year earlier. The volume of exports of goods grew by 3 percent in February relative to twelve months previously. Over the past five months, exports growth ranged between 3 and 6 percent. The volume of imports increased by 1.5 percent in February, the lowest growth rate in almost twelve months.

According to Statistics Netherlands’ second estimate of economic growth, the Dutch economy shrank by 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared with the preceding quarter. The first estimate, published on 14 February put the contraction at 0.2 percent.

Netherlands Unemployment Rate Rises to 7.7 percent in February  
The most recent figures released by Statistics Netherlands show that unemployment adjusted for seasonal variation grew by 21 thousand in February to 613 thousand. The average monthly increase over the past three months was 20 thousand. Within a period of three months, the unemployment rate has gone up from 7.0 to 7.7 percent.

In January, 7.5 percent of the workforce was unemployed. A month earlier the rate was 7.2 percent. In recent months, unemployment rose sharply. In the past three months there were in average more 19,000 unemployed per month. The number of men unemployed increased in average 11,000 and the number of women unemployed 8,000.

According to the first estimate of the CBS, the economy in the fourth quarter of 2012 contracted 0.2 percent compared to the previous quarter. In the third quarter the economy shrank by 1.0 percent from the second quarter. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011 the economy contracted by 0.9 percent.

The volume of exports of goods grew nearly 4 percent in December relative to twelve months previously . The growth figure for October and November was approximately 5 percent. The volume of imports grew by nearly 5 percent in December, about the same growth rate as in the two preceding months.

Netherlands Unemployment Rate Rises to 7.2% in December  
In December, the unemployment rate rose further to 7.2 percent. A month before, 7.0 percent of the workforce was unemployed. Unemployment has risen almost continuously since June 2011 when the unemployment rate was 5.0 percent.
