The GDP of Nicaragua advanced 4.3 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2016 following a downwardly revised 5.2 percent growth in the previous period. Most sectors expanded at a slower pace: agriculture (+4.5 percent from +9.4 percent in Q2); transport and communication (+4.4 percent from +5.8 percent); trade (+4.3 percent from +6.9 percent); mining and quarrying (2.2 percent from +3.9 percent); construction (+1.3 percent from +2.6 percent) and manufacturing (+0.7 percent from +5.2 percent). In the first nine months of the year, the economy expanded 4.3 percent.

Consumer prices in Nicaragua rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, easing from a 3.3 percent increase in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since December last year, as cost rose at a slower pace for: housing (+3.7 percent vs +5.7 percent in November); miscellaneous goods and services (+4 percent vs +4.1 percent) and communications (+2.2 percent vs +2.8 percent). Meantime, prices increased at a faster rate for recreation and culture (+7.5 percent vs 4.7 percent); transport (+5.4 percent vs +3.2 percent); restaurants and hotels (+6.1 percent from +5.9 percent). In contrast, food and non-alcoholic beverages prices fell 0.7 percent (from +0.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.8 percent compared to a 0.3 percent rise in the previous month.
