Nicaragua's economy expanded 4.2 percent year-on-year in the last three months of 2016, slowing from an upwardly revised 4.7 percent growth in the previous period. It is the lowest growth in three quarters, mainly due to a slowdown in trade (3.6 percent from 4.4 percent in Q3), real estate (1.6 percent from 3.6 percent), livestock (9.5 percent from 12.9 percent) and mining (3.8 percent from 20.7 percent) and a 7 percent slump in construction (from 3.9 percent). In contrast, production rose faster in manufacturing (3 percent from a flat reading), transportation (5.3 percent from 4.5 percent) and agriculture (6.7 percent from 3.6 percent).

Consumer prices in Nicaragua rose 3.17 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, following a 3.69 percent increase in the previous month. The slowdown was mainly driven by food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.9 percent from -0.3 percent in February); liquor & tobacco (8.4 percent from 9.1 percent); housing & utilities (9.5 percent from 10.3 percent); transport (7.7 percent from 8.9 percent); and restaurants & lodging (2.7 percent from 3.8 percent). In contrast, costs increased further for recreation and culture (5.3 percent from 5.2 percent), while education prices rose again by 8.2 percent. On a monthly basis, prices went up 0.12 percent, compared to 0.74 percent rise in February.
