Imports went up 11.7 percent to 48.77 NOK billion, mainly due to a 140.2 percent rise in purchases of ships and & oil platforms.

Consumer confidence in Norway jumped to 5.2 in the March quarter of 2017, compared to an upwardly revised 1.8 in the December quarter 2016. It was the second straight positive reading and the highest since the first quarter 2015, as consumers viewed the country's economic prospect was improving sharply and they believed their personal finances were likely to improve during next year. Also, there was a clear change of sentiment into more optimists on the part of the country that had been hit hardest by the oil slump. "This is a strong indication that the respondents feel that the bottom has been reached," says CEO Idar Kreutzer in Finance Norway.

In contrast, cost fell for clothing (-1.2 percent vs 3.4 percent). Core inflation rose 2.1 percent from a year earlier, following a 2.5 percent gain in December while market expected 2.6 percent. Compared to the prior month, core inflation fell 0.5 percent. On a monthly basis, prices dropped 0.1 percent.

Norway GDP Growth Rate at 1.10 percent  
The Norwegian economy grew by 1.1 percent quarter-on-quarter in the Q4 2016, following an upwardly revised 0.6 percent contraction in Q3 and beating market consensus of a 0.7 percent growth. It was the first expansion since the Q1 2016, mainly due to a surge in petroleum activities and ocean transport (4.3 percent from -3.2 percent in Q3). On the expenditure side, household consumption recovered (0.7 percent from stagnation) and government spending rose 0.5 percent (the same as in the previous period). Meanwhile, investment increased by 0.6 percent, slowing from a 1.2 percent rise in Q3. In contrast, exports fell 1.3 percent (+0.4 percent in Q3). Imports declined by 1.5 percent (-0.5 percent). Year-on-year, the economy expanded 1.8 percent, following a 0.9 percent contraction in Q3. In 2016, the economy advanced 1 percent, slowing from a 1.6 percent expansion in 2015. It is the lowest growth rate in 3 years, due to a slowdown in household spending and a fall in exports.
