Norway Interest Rate at 0.50 percent  
The Norges Bank left its key policy rate steady at a record low of 0.5 percent on March 16th, 2017 as widely expected, saying the inflation will be lower than expected earlier. Policymakers added that this implies, in isolation, a lower key policy rate in the period ahead. On the other hand, the upturn in the real economy appears to have taken hold, and unemployment has declined. With a key policy rate close to the current level, there are prospects that inflation will pick up again further out. An even lower key policy rate could lead to a further acceleration in house price inflation and debt accumulation.

Consumer prices in Norway rose 2.5 percent year-on-year in February of 2017, following a 2.8 percent rise in January while markets expected 2.8 percent. Prices went up at a slower pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.1 percent vs 2.0 percent in the prior month), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (1.7 percent vs 2.0 percent), health (2.8 percent vs 3.3 percent), transport (2.7 percent vs 4.1 percent) and communications (2.2 percent vs 2.7 percent). Cost rose more for: housing & utilities (4.6 percent vs 3.0 percent); furnishing, household equipment (1.7 percent vs 1.3 percent) and recreation (4.2 percent vs 3.9 percent). In contrast, cost fell for clothing (-1.2 percent vs -1.2 percent). Core inflation slowed to 1.6 percent from 2.1 percent in January and below consensus of 2.0 percent. Compared to the prior month, core consumer prices rose 0.5 percent, after declining 0.5 percent in a month earlier.

The Norwegian economy grew by 1.1 percent quarter-on-quarter in the Q4 2016, following an upwardly revised 0.6 percent contraction in Q3 and beating market consensus of a 0.7 percent growth. It was the first expansion since the Q1 2016, mainly due to a surge in petroleum activities and ocean transport (4.3 percent from -3.2 percent in Q3). On the expenditure side, household consumption recovered (0.7 percent from stagnation) and government spending rose 0.5 percent (the same as in the previous period). Meanwhile, investment increased by 0.6 percent, slowing from a 1.2 percent rise in Q3. In contrast, exports fell 1.3 percent (+0.4 percent in Q3). Imports declined by 1.5 percent (-0.5 percent). Year-on-year, the economy expanded 1.8 percent, following a 0.9 percent contraction in Q3. In 2016, the economy advanced 1 percent, slowing from a 1.6 percent expansion in 2015. It is the lowest growth rate in 3 years, due to a slowdown in household spending and a fall in exports.
