Considering January to December 2016, exports declined by 10.6 percent compared to the same period a year earlier to 747.14 NOK billion while imports fell 1.5 percent to 606.70 NOK billion. That brought the trade surplus to 140.4 NOK billion during the period, the lowest surplus since 1999.

The inflation rate remained at the lowest figure since May while markets expected a 3.8 percent gain. Prices went up at a faster pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (+1.7 percent from +1.6 percent), transport (+2.7 percent from +2.6 percent) and clothing & footwear (+3.4 percent from +2.6 percent). Cost increased less than in the prior month for: housing & utilities (+5.6 percent from +6.0 percent) and recreation & culture (+3.9 percent +4.5 percent). Core inflation rose 2.6 percent from a year earlier, following a 2.6 percent gain in November. Compared to the prior month, core inflation dropped by 0.4 percent in November. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.5 percent, compared to a 0.1 percent rise in a month earlier and missing market consensus of a 0.1 percent decline. It was the first fall since August 2016.

Consumer confidence in Norway increased to 0.3 in the fourth quarter of 2016 from a downwardly revised -5.5 in the previous period. It was the first positive reading since the second quarter of 2015, as large majority of respondents believed their personal finances were likely to improve during next year even as many thought the country's overall economic prospects may still be weak. "The survey has risen in three consecutive quarters, a strong indication that those polled believe the downturn has passed and that policies that have been introduced have positive effect," Finance Norway chief executive, Idar Kreutzer, said in a statement.
