Panama Balance of Trade at -1009640.52 PAB Thousand


Panama recorded a trade deficit of PAB 1009.6 million in December of 2016, almost unchanged from a PAB 1009.9 million gap in the same period of 2015. Exports edged down 0.1 percent year-on-year to PAB 45.38 million and imports remained broadly unchanged at PAB 1055 million. Considering whole 2016, the trade deficit narrowed 3.3 percent year-on-year to PAB 11.1 billion. Sales tumbled 8.5 percent to PAB 0.6 billion, dragged down by fruit, namely bananas (-7.4 percent), melons (-20.1 percent), pineapple (-34.9 percent); fresh and frozen fish (-19.1 percent) and beef cattle (-24.4 percent). Imports declined at a slower 3.6 percent to PAB 11.7 billion, driven by intermediate goods (-12.4 percent) and capital goods (-4 percent) while increased for consumer goods (2.2 percent).

Exports from Panama edged down 0.1 percent year-on-year to PAB 45.38 million in December 2016. Considering whole 2016, sales tumbled 8.5 percent to PAB 0.6 billion, dragged down by fruit, namely bananas (-7.4 percent), melons (-20.1 percent), pineapple (-34.9 percent); fresh and frozen fish (-19.1 percent) and beef cattle (-24.4 percent).

Considering whole 2016, purchases declined 3.6 percent to PAB 11.7 billion, driven by intermediate goods (-12.4 percent) and capital goods (-4 percent) while increased for consumer goods (2.2 percent).

Panama Inflation Rate at 1.60 percent


Consumer prices in Panama rose 1.6 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a 1.5 percent increase in the prior month. It was the highest inflation rate since January of 2015 as prices went up faster for transport (4.8 percent vs 3.2 percent in December), miscellaneous goods and services (1.9 percent vs 1.8 percent) and housing and utilities (2.7 percent vs 0.5 percent). Additional upward pressure came from: food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.7 percent, the same pace as in prior month), restaurants and hotels (2.3 percent vs 3.3 percent), recreation and culture (0.1 percent vs 0.3 percent) and clothing and footwear (0.9 percent, the same as in prior month). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent compared to a 0.1 percent rise in December.
