Panama recorded a trade deficit of PAB 961.4 million in November of 2016, higher than a PAB 912.4 million shortfall a year ago. Exports rose 3.7 percent year-on-year to PAB 50.46 million, while imports increased at a faster 5.3 percent to PAB 1012 million. Considering the first eleven months of the year, the trade deficit narrowed by 3.6 percent year-on-year to PAB 10.1 billion. Sales decreased 9.1 percent to PAB 0.6 billion, dragged down by cattle (-73.6 percent), leather products (-45.8 percent); fruits, namely pineapple (-36.5 percent) and fuels and lubricants (-13.1 percent). Imports declined at a slower 3.9 percent to PAB 10.6 billion, driven by intermediate goods (-12.9 percent) and capital goods (-2.6 percent) while increased for consumer goods (+0.9 percent).

Exports from Panama rose 3.7 percent year-on-year to PAB 50.46 million in November of 2016. Considering the first eleven months of the year, sales decreased 9.1 percent to PAB 0.6 billion, dragged down by cattle (-73.6 percent), leather products (-45.8 percent); fruits, namely pineapple (-36.5 percent) and fuels and lubricants (-13.1 percent).

Panama Inflation Rate at 1.50 percent


Consumer prices in Panama rose 1.5 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, following a 1.3 percent increase in the previous month. It was the highest inflation since January of 2015 as prices advanced faster for transport (+4.0 percent compared with +2 percent in November) and clothing and footwear (+0.9 percent from +0.8 percent). Additional upward pressure came from restaurants and hotels (+3.3 percent from +3.4 percent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.7, the same pace as in the previous month) and miscellaneous goods and services (+1.8 percent, the same pace as in previous month). By contrast, cost of communications declined 2.7 percent (the same as in November). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.1 percent after a 0.1 percent drop in November.
