The Central Reserve Bank of Peru held its benchmark interest rate at 4.25 percent on April 6th, 2017 as widely expected. Policymakers left borrowing cost steady for the 14th straight meeting, underscoring that the recent spike in inflation is explained by transitory weather factors and that consumer prices are expected to converge to the 1-3 percent target over the next months. The inflation rate in Peru was recorded at 3.97 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, up from 3.25 percent in February. The last time inflation stood on target was August of 2016.

Consumer prices in Peru rose 3.97 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, compared to a 3.25 percent increase in February. It was the highest inflation rate since March 2016. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1.3 percent, following a 0.32 percent rise in the prior month and marking the highest inflation figure in nearly two decade - after weeks of heavy flooding squeezes prices of food. The unusual spike in prices comes as economic growth is also expected to be hit by El Nino phenomenon. For 2017, the country's central bank targets inflation to be between 1 to 3 percent.
