Slovak consumer prices increased by 1.2 percent year-on-year in February 2017, following a 0.7 percent rise in the previous month and beating market expectations of a 0.9 percent gain. It was the highest inflation rate since August 2013, as prices rose at faster pace for: Transport (7.2 percent from 4.9 percent in January); food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.4 percent from 1.4 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (1.2 percent from 1.1 percent); hotels, cafés and restaurants (2.1 percent from 2 percent); and health (4.8 percent from 4.6 percent). Annual core inflation rate went up to 1.9 percent from 1.3 percent in January and above market consensus of 1.5 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.5 percent, compared to a 0.3 percent gain in the previous month and market expectations of a 0.2 percent increase.

Slovak industrial production went up 7.6 percent year-on-year in January 2017, following an upwardly revised 5.8 percent rise in the prior month and above market expectations of a 3.5 percent gain. It was the sharpest increase since August last year, as output rose at a faster pace for: Manufacturing (6.3 percent from 4.9 percent); electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (14.2 percent from 11.4 percent); and mining and quarrying (19.1 percent from 7.7 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production increased by 0.7 percent.

Construction output in Slovakia went down 17.2 percent year-on-year in January 2017, compared to a 18.5 percent fall in the previous month. Output realized by domestic construction companies decreased by 18.2 percent, as works in new construction, renewals and enhancements fell 27.2 percent while repairs and maintenance works grew by 5.9 percent. In terms of output specification, construction of buildings decreased by 18.9 percent and civil engineering shrank by 15.3 percent.

Household consumption advanced further by 3.3 percent (2.5 percent in Q3) and foreign demand contributed positively, as exports rose 6.3 percent (4.5 percent in Q3) and imports went up at a slower 4.5 percent (0.8 percent in Q3). Meanwhile, fixed investment fell sharply by 15 percent (-17 percent in Q3), and government spending declined 1 percent (2.1 percent in Q3). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the GDP advanced 0.8 percent. In 2016 as a whole, the economy grew 3.3 percent after expanding by 3.8 percent in 2015.

Other contributions came from: food, beverages and tobacco (8.9 percent from 6.9 percent); non-specialized stores (3.6 percent from 3.4 percent) and household equipment in specialized stores (3.9 percent, after being flat in December). In contrast, sales went down for stalls and markets (-7.5 percent from 27.8 percent) and cultural and recreation goods (-9.5 percent from 9.6 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales decreased by 0.4 percent following a 0.7 percent rise in the previous month.
