Consumer prices in Sri Lanka increased 5.5 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following an upwardly revised 4.5 percent gain in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since July of 2016 as cost accelerated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.5 percent from 4.1 percent in December of 2016), education (14.6 percent from 5.6 percent), miscellaneous goods and services (13.9 percent from 7.7 percent) and transport (3.4 percent from 0.2 percent) while was flat for housing and utilities (+0.2 percent in November). Additional upward pressure came from: furniture and equipment (+1.8 percent from -0.5 percent) and communication (+16 percent, the same pace as in the previous month). On a monthly basis, consumer prices advanced 1.2 percent, compared with 1 percent rise in the previous month.
