In contrast, suppliers’ delivery time declined with normalising supply arrangements especially from China after their new year period. Employment also dropped slightly compared to the previous month. In the first three months of the year, the number of tourist arrivals rose 3.4 percent fo 604,953.

Consumer prices in Sri Lanka increased 7.3 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, following 6.8 percent gain in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since May of 2013 as cost accelerated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (9.2 percent from 7.7 percent in February) due to a lingering drought. Additional upward pressure came from: furniture and equipment (3 percent from 2.1 percent); clothing and footwear (6.6 percent from 5.9 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (14.9 percent from 13.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.2 percent, compared with 0.5 percent rise in the previous month.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 bps to 7.25 percent at its March 2017 meeting. Policymakers said tightening of monetary policy is necessary as a precautionary measure, in order to contain the build-up of adverse inflation expectations and the possible acceleration of demand side inflationary pressures through excessive monetary and credit expansion. In February 2017, consumer prices rose 6.8 percent year-on-year, after gaining 5.5 percent in the previous month and marking the highest inflation rate since June of 2013. The central bank also decided to increase its lending facility rate to 8.75 percent from 8.50 percent.
