Taiwan Industrial Production at 10.64 percent  
Industrial production in Taiwan jumped 10.64 percent year-on-year in February of 2017, compared to a downwardly revised 2.46 percent increase in the previous month. It was the highest increase since January 2013 as production went up at a faster pace for manufacturing (13.97 percent from 3.46 percent in January) and mining and quarrying rebounded (13.53 percent from -2.63 percent). In contrast, the output fell for: building construction (-44.67 percent from 12.45 percent), water supply (-3.32 percent from 0.96 percent), and electricity and gas supply (-27.71 percent from -23.15 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production went down 8.11 percent.

It was the first decrease since August 2016 and a record fall, due to decreases in sales at general merchandise (-15.35 percent from 10.32 percent); food, beverages and tobacco (-13.60 percent from 0.97 percent); household supplies (-8.34 percent from -11.21 percent); clothes (-18.65 percent from 6.67 percent); pharmaceuticals and medical goods (-7.87 percent from 7.40 percent); educational and entertainment articles (-12.20 percent from 0.34 percent) and other retail trade (-0.43 percent from -7.79 percent). In contrast sales rose for fuel products (26.38 percent from 25.85 percent). On a monthly basis, sales decreased by 20.15 percent.

Export orders from Taiwan jumped 22 percent year-on-year to USD 33.75 billion in February of 2017, following a 5.2 percent rise in January and beating market expectations of a 15.8 percent gain. It is the biggest increase since August of 2010, mainly boosted by orders for information and communication products (23.9 percent); electronics (15.4 percent); basic metals and articles thereof (34.3 percent); machinery (20.1 percent); plastics, rubber (38.8 percent); chemicals (14.3 percent) and electrical machinery (36.7 percent). Export orders from China surged the most (40.5 percent), followed by those to Japan (23.6 percent), the US (21.1 percent) and Europe (12.9 percent).

Taiwan Unemployment Rate at 3.83 percent  
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Taiwan dropped slightly to 3.83 percent in February of 2017 from 3.84 percent in January. On an unadjusted basis, unemployment rate fell to 3.85 percent from 3.95 percent in the same month a year earlier. The number of unemployed decreased by 9,000 to 453,000 compared to February 2016 while the number of employed persons were up by 76,000 to 11,307,000. Labor force participation rate was at 58.75 percent, up 0.09 percentage points from the same month of the prior year. Youth unemployment rose to 12.18 percent in February from 11.89 percent in the same month a year earlier. Total labour force was 11,760,000, up from 11,693.000 in February 2016.

The central bank of Taiwan held its benchmark interest rate steady at 1.375 percent on March 23rd 2017, in line with market expectations. Policymakers said the decision took into account elevated uncertainties over US and European economic policies, a gradual domestic economic recovery, and the fact that actual output is still lower than potential output. Meanwhile, current inflationary pressures and future inflation expectations are both mild, whereas a stronger NT dollar has put domestic financial conditions under strains. The economy is expected to advance 1.92 percent in 2017, up from 1.5 percent in 2016 and the highest in three years, according to forecasts from the statistical office. Inflation is seen at 1.25 percent.

Consumer prices in Taiwan unexpectedly fell 0.04 percent from a year earlier in February of 2017, following a 2.25 percent increase in January while market expected a 0.5 percent gain. It was the first drop since August 2015, driven by a decline in prices of food (-0.75 percent from 2.98 in the prior month), education & entertainment (-1.43 percent from 1.87 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (-3.11 percent from 6.41 percent). In contrast, cost increased for: clothing (0.25 percent from 0.18 percent), housing (0.06 percent from 0.01 percent), transport & communication (4.14 percent from 4.66 percent) and health (1.22 percent from 0.92 percent). Core consumer prices rose 0.17 percent from a year earlier, compared to a downwardly revised 1.64 percent rise in January. It was the lowest figure since February 2014. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.34 percent, following a 0.02 percent drop in the prior month and marking the fourth straight month of drop.

The Taiwanese economy expanded 2.88 percent year-on-year in the December quarter of 2016, higher than a preliminary figure of a 2.58 percent expansion and an upwardly revised 2.12 percent growth in the September quarter, final data showed. On the production side, most sectors grew: manufacturing (6.16 percent), transportation (8.59 percent), wholesale & retail trade (3.36 percent), information and communication (1.94 percent), electricity and gas supply (2.54 percent, and real estate and ownership of dwellings (1.18 percent). In contrast, a decline was seen for construction (-2.03 percent), and mining and quarrying (-11.48 percent).
