On an unadjusted basis, unemployment rate also dropped to 3.79 percent from 3.87 percent in the same month a year earlier. The number of unemployed decreased by 7,000 to 446,000 compared to December 2015 while the number of employed persons were up by 72,000 to 11,315,000. Labor force participation rate was at 58.80 percent, down 0.02 percentage points from the same month of the prior year. Youth unemployment stood at 12.10 percent in December, compared to 12.11 percent in the same month a year earlier. Total labour force was 11,761,000, up from 11,695.000 in December 2015.

Considering full year of 2016, wholesale prices declined by 3.01 percent compared to the previous year.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 1 percent, following a 0.43 percent drop in a month earlier.

The Taiwanese GDP expanded 2.03 percent year-on-year in the three months to September of 2016, compared to a preliminary estimate of a 2.06 percent growth and a 1.1 percent expansion in the June quarter, final figure showed. It was the strongest growth since the March quarter 2015, driven by a rebound in investment (+3.11 percent from -3.10 percent in the June quarter) while private consumption (+2.46 percent from +1.23 percent), government spending (+3.56 percent from +1.96 percent) and exports (+3.59 percent from +0.63 percent) rose at a faster pace. On the production side, manufacturing sector grew the most by 5.17 percent, followed by transportation and storage (+5.12 percent), electricity and gas supply (+3.52 percent) and finance and insurance (+3.25 percent). In contrast, construction fell 2.51 percent. On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted basis, the economy advanced 0.96 percent, accelerating from a 0.06 percent expansion in the June quarter.

Taiwan Current Account at 17090.00 USD Million  
Taiwanese current account surplus fell to $17.1 billion in the third quarter of 2016 compared to a $18.3 billion surplus a year earlier. The goods surplus narrowed by $0.74 billion to $17.70 billion as exports (-5.82 percent) fell at a faster pace than imports (-5.08 percent). The services deficit widened by $0.55 billion to $3.70 billion, mainly because of a fall in travel receipts and an increase in payments for air passenger transportation. The secondary income deficit widened by $0.12 billion to $0.92 billion, owing to an increase in workers' outward remittances. In contrast, the primary income surplus rose by $0.22 billion to $4.01 billion, mainly reflecting the increase in interest income from bond investment abroad.
