Uganda Balance of Trade at -131.90 USD Million  
Uganda recorded a trade deficit of USD 131.9 million in November of 2016, compared to USD 277.5 million trade gap a year earlier. It was the smallest trade deficit recorded since January of 2008. Year-on-year, exports rose by 36.5 percent to USD 288.67 million, the highest on record and due to higher sales of coffee (+101.6 percent), gold (+207.9 percent) and other products (+39.7 percent). Main export partners were Ethiopia (19.3 percent of total exports), the United Emirates (13.8 percent) and South Sudan (10.5 percent). In contrast, imports plunged by 14 percent year-on-year to USD 420.6 million. Uganda's top import partners were: China (16 percent of total imports), Kenya (13 percent), India (12.5 percent) and the United Emirates (8.2 percent).

Consumer prices in Uganda increased 5.7 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, following 4.6 percent rise in November. It is the highest inflation rate in six months, mainly boosted by prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages (7.3 percent compared to 5.1 percent in November), reflecting the impact of a prolonged drought; transport (5.2 percent compared to 2.9 percent) and housing and utilities (1 percent compared to 0.5 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1.2 percent, following a 0.7 percent gain in November.

In contrast, industrial output expanded faster (+3.1 percent from +3.0 percent). On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy contract by 0.2 percent, from a 0.6 percent expansion in the previous quarter.
