Vietnam Industrial Production at 5.50 percent  
Industrial production in Vietnam rose 5.5 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, compared to a 15.2 percent gain in February. It was the second straight month of growth, mainly due to an increase in the output of processing (8.9 percent from 22.4 percent in a month earlier). In contrast, mining production declined by 7.5 percent (from -8.6 percent). For the first three months of 2017, industrial output rose 4.1 percent, much slower than a 7.2 percent rise in the same period a year earlier.

Vietnam Inflation Rate at 4.65 percent  
Consumer prices in Vietnam rose 4.65 percent year-on-year in March of 2017, compared to a 5.02 percent rise in February. It was the lowest inflation rate since November 2016, as prices went up at a slower pace for: food (0.11 percent vs 0.50 percent in the prior month) and healthcare (35.93 percent vs 57.21 percent). Prices increased further for: beverages, tobacco (1.67 percent vs 1.14 percent), garments (1.05 percent vs 1.0 percent), housing (5.30 percent vs 4.77 percent), household appliances (0.98 percent vs 0.91 percent), transport (14.57 percent vs 9.97 percent), education (10.17 percent vs 10.07 percent), culture (0.92 percent vs 0.78 percent) and other goods and services (2.12 percent vs 1.83 percent). Considering January to March 2017, consumer prices rose 4.96 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.21 percent in March, following a 0.23 percent gain in a month earlier and marking the lowest figure in seven months.

Vietnam GDP Annual Growth Rate at 5.10 percent  
Vietnam's economy expanded an annual 5.10 percent in the first quarter of 2017, slowing sharply from a 6.68 percent growth in the previous three months, preliminary estimates from the General Statistics Office showed. It was the weakest quarterly growth since the March quarter of 2014, due to adverse weather and declining agricultural output. For 2017, the economy is expected to grow by 6.7 percent. In 2016, the economy advanced 6.21 percent, compared to a 6.68 percent expansion in the same period a year earlier.

The Nikkei Manufacturing PMI in Vietnam rose to 54.6 in March of 2017 from 54.2 in February. It was the highest reading since May 2015, as output and new orders rose at faster paces while new export orders went up the most so far this year and employment growth was at 6-month high. Also, business sentiment remained solid, supported by predictions of higher new orders as well as business expansion plans. Also, buying activity increased markedly. At the same time, input cost inflation quickened to the sharpest in almost six years amid higher raw material prices.

Imports jumped 21 percent to 17.4 USD billion, due to chemical products (26.2 percent) and raw materials for textile and garment and footwear (19.7 percent). Considering the first quarter 2017, exports grew by 12.8 percent compared to the same period in the prior year and imports rose 22.4 percent. That brought the trade deficit of 1.9 USD billion during the period.
