For the first two months of 2017, industrial output rose 2.4 percent, much slower than a 6.6 percent gain in the same period a year earlier.

Vietnam Manufacturing PMI at 54.20  
The Nikkei Manufacturing PMI in Vietnam rose to 54.2 in February of 2017 from 51.9 in January. It was the strongest in rise since May 2015, as output rose at a faster pace and the fastest to a 21-month high. While new orders went up solidly at a faster during the month as firms reported improving demand from international clients. Meantime, employment rose and the latest increase as solid and faster than series average. While stocks of purchaces rose at the fastest pace in the six-year survey history and stocks of finished goods also rose at the fastest pace since May 2015 amid a stronger expansion of output, and output prices increased driven by the depreciation of the dong against the US dollar.

It was the slowest increase since July 2016, mainly supported by an increase in sales of lodging/dining (3.1 percent). In contrast, sales of goods fell the most by 8.0 percent, followed by those of other services (-6.4 percent) and tourism (-0.6 percent).

Tourist arrivals in Vietnam surged 42.2 percent year-on-year to 1.2 million in February 2017. It was the largest visitors on record, driven by festive season. Considering the first two months of 2017, tourist arrivals went up 39.5 percent over the same period last year. Visitors from China rose the most by 77.7 percent, followed by those from European countries (26.3 percent), South Korea (25 percent), Japan (5.3 percent), the US (1.3 percent), Australia (5.0 percent) and Africa (3.8 percent).

Consumer prices in Vietnam rose 5.02 percent year-on-year in February of 2017, following a 5.22 percent rise in the previous month. Prices went up at a slower pace for: food (0.50 percent from 2.37 percent), garments (1.00 percent from 1.51 percent), education (10.07 percent from 10.35 percent), beverages, tobacco (1.14 percent from 2.32 percent), household appliances (0.91 percent from 1.06 percent), culture, entertainment (0.78 percent from 1.36 percent), and other (1.83 percent from 2.50 percent). Prices increased at a faster pace for : transport (9.97 percent from 5.02 percent in January), medicine (57.21 percent from 56.97 percent), and housing (4.77 percent from 3.54 percent). In contrast, cost fell for post and telecoms (-0.31 percent from -0.80 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.236 percent, slowing from a 0.46 percent gain in the prior month.

Vietnam's economy expanded an annual 6.68 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016, compared to an upwardly revised 6.56 percent growth in the previous three months, a preliminary estimate from the General Statistics Office showed. It was the strongest quarterly growth since the December quarter of 2015, boosted by rising exports. For full year of 2016, the economy grew by 6.21 percent, slowing from a 6.68 percent expansion in the same period a year earlier and falling short of the government's target of 6.7 percent. It was the first annual slowdown since 2012, mainly driven by adverse weather, a marine environmental disaster and an unfavorable global economy.
