French Stocks Trade Flat

The CAC 40 traded flat at around 7,837 on Thursday, taking a pause after seven consecutive sessions of gains and reaching a seven-month high in the previous session, as investors eased off while continuing to monitor developments in U.S.

policy under President Trump.

Attention also shifted to the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump was set to address attendees via video call.

In France, business confidence fell to a three-month low of 95.3 in January 2025 from 97 in the previous month and below market expectations of 96.

On the corporate front, Sanofi led the gainers with a 1.8% increase, followed by Dassault Systèmes, which saw its shares rise 0.8%, and Vinci, up 0.7%.

In contrast, Kering was the top laggard, with shares falling 1.4%, while Stellantis NV dropped 1.2%, and Bureau Veritas declined 0.7%.

Spare capacity persisted across the sector, with 57% of firms reporting operating at full capacity in February, down from a revised 66% in the prior month. Earlier data showed Finland’s manufacturing confidence in January stood slightly above the EU average, indicating relatively resilient industrial sentiment despite remaining capacity slack.

Finland’s manufacturing confidence fell to -1 in January 2026, returning to the negative territory following a neutral reading in the previous month. Production expectations for the coming months weakened sharply to 18 from a downwardly revised 25 in December, while finished goods inventories turned neutral from 4. Meanwhile, order backlog outlook were slightly less negative, easing to -20 from -21. In addition, capacity utilization rose marginally, with 67% of companies reported operating at full capacity in January from 64% in the prior month, but still below the long-term average of 70%.
