Consumer prices in Brunei declined by 0.2 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a 1.6 percent drop in December. It was the 10th straight month of fall but the weakest since March 2016. Downward prices pressure came from: food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.9 percent from -1.7 percent in December), clothing and footwear (-2.8 percent vs -3.7 percent), housing & utilities (-0.3 percent vs -4.1 percent), furnishing (-0.4 percent vs -0.6 percent), health (-2.7 percent vs -0.4 percent) and communication (-1.4 percent vs -1.4 percent). In contrast, prices increased for: transport (1.4 percent vs -3.0 percent), recreation & culture (0.1 percent vs -1.7 percent), restaurants & hotels (0.1 percent vs from -0.9 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (1 percent vs -0.2 percent). Inflation was steady for education (6.0 percent). On a monthly basis, prices fell 0.3 percent, the same as the prior month.

Exports in Brunei decreased 23.7 percent year-on-year to BND 512.9 million in December of 2016, mainly driven by lower sales of: mineral fuels (-27.7 percent), namely liquefied natural gas (-48.6 percent), and manufactured goods (-21.6 percent). Main export partners were Japan (30.6 percent of total exports); Malaysia (11.3 percent); China (11.1 percent).In 2016, exports fell 22.7 percent to BND 6,735.6 million.

Brunei trade surplus decreased 41.5 percent year-on-year to BND 203.3 million in December of 2016 compared to a BND 347.7 million surplus a year earlier. Exports fell 23.7 percent, driven by lower sales of: mineral fuels (-27.7 percent), namely liquefied natural gas (-48.6 percent), and manufactured goods (-21.6 percent). Imports declined 4.5 percent due to lower purchases of: machinery and transport equipment (-11.5 percent); manufactured goods (-18.4 percent); miscellaneous manufactured articles (-7.2 percent); food (-3 percent) and crude materials inedible (-45.6 percent). Main export partners were Japan (30.6 percent of total exports); Malaysia (11.3 percent); China (11.1 percent). The highest share of imports came from Singapore (21.2 percent of total imports); Malaysia (20.9 percent) and China (14.5 percent). In 2016, the trade surplus narrowed 28.6 percent to BND 3046.7 million, as exports fell 22.7 percent and imports dropped 17.1 percent.
