Fiji Inflation Rate at 6.80 percent  
Consumer prices in Fiji rose 6.8 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, compared to a 3.9 percent gain in December 2016. It was the highest inflation rate since December 2011, as prices increased at a faster pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (7.1 percent from 2.9 percent), transport (0.5 percent from -3.6 percent), furnishing and utilities (1.3 percent from - 0.6 percent), clothing and footwear (1.2 percent from 0.8 percent), and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (41.5 percent from 35.3 percent). Additional upward pressure came from: restaurants and hotels (2.5 percent from 3.9 percent) and inflation was steady for education (9 percent). In contrast, prices decreased for: miscellaneous goods and services (-0.8 percent), housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (-0.7 percent), communication (-0.3 percent), recreation and culture (-0.3 percent), and health (-0.4 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 2.3 percent.

Fiji Interest Rate at 0.50 percent  
The Reserve Bank of Fiji decided to maintain its overnight policy rate at 0.5 percent on January 26th 2017. Policymakers said that the decision was taken to encourage investment and further strengthen growth in the economy. "The economy remains on a recovery path as reconstruction works continue following TC Winston and given the damage cased by tropical depression in December,” the Governor and Chairman of the Board, Barry Whiteside, said in a statement. Despite potential policy changing by the new United States administration, outlook for the Bank’s monetary policy objectives remain firm. Inflation fell to 3.9 percent in December from 4.3 percent in November. For now, year-end inflation is projected at around 2.5 percent. While foreign reserves levels remain adequate, currently at $1.906 million, sufficient to cover 5.1 months of retained imports of goods and non-factor services.
