Consumer prices in Tunisia went up 4.2 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, following a 4 percent rise in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate recorded since November of 2015 mainly boosted by cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages (+3.2 percent compared to +2.5 percent in November), transports (+4.4 percent from +4.3 percent), education (+7.2 percent from +6.9 percent) and restaurants and hotels (+4.3 percent from +4.1 percent). Additional upward pressure came from: housing and utilities (+5.6 percent from +5.8 percent) and clothing and footwear (+7.3 percent from +7.4 percent) . On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.4 percent compared with 0.2 percent gain in November.

In contrast, contraction was recorded in non-manufacturing (-5.6 percent from -0.5 percent) and agriculture and fishing (-3.7 percent form -3.6 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP grew by 0.2 percent.
