Macau Inflation Rate at 0.80 percent  
Consumer prices in Macau rose 0.80 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, compared to a 0.72 percent increase in the prior month. It was the highest inflation rate since January, as prices went up at a faster pace for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (0.7 percent from 0.4 percent), education (7.42 percent from 7.38 percent), recreation & culture (2.5 percent from 0.5 percent), household goods & furnishings (1.9 percent from 1.7 percent), and health (3.5 percent from 3.4 percent). Prices rose at a slower pace for: miscellaneous goods and services (1.7 percent from 1.9 percent) and transport (3.6 percent from 4.3 percent). Also, cost fell for: clothing & footwear (-0.7 percent from -0.22 percent) and communication (-5.6 percent from -1.7 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.1 percent, compared to a 0.01 percent fall in March.

Macau Tourist Arrivals at 2742799.00  
Visitor arrivals in Macau rose 11.0 percent year-on-year to 2,742,799 in April of 2017, following a 5.7 percent growth in March. While overnight visitors went up by 17.7 percent, same-day visitors increased by 4.4 percent. Visitors from China, that accounted for 64.5 percent of total visitors, went up 7.1 percent (from 11.5 percent in the prior month) with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme rising by 18.5 percent. Also, visitors increased from the Republic of Korea (48.7 percent); Hong Kong (25.3 percent); the United States (5.4 percent); Australia (17.4 percent); Canada (6.8 percent) and the United Kingdom (18.3 percent).

Macau Retail Sales YoY at 11.50 percent  
Retail sales in Macau jumped 11.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, following an upwardly revised 2.4 percent increase in the previous period. It was the strongest increase in retail sales volume since first quarter of 2014, driven by higher sales of goods in department stores (15.3 percent vs 5.7 percent in Q3); watches, clocks and jewelry (20.6 percent vs -6.1 percent); automotive fuels (5.3 percent vs 4.5 percent); cosmetics and sanitary articles (23.8 percent vs 9 percent); leather goods (26.3 percent vs 27.5 percent); clothing (12.9 percent from 2 percent); pharmaceutical goods (4.6 percent vs -18.7 percent); goods in supermarkets (2 percent from -1.4 percent). Also, sales dropped less for household appliances (-5.2 percent vs -8.9 percent) and motor vehicles (-12.3 percent vs -46.6 percent).

The Central Bank of Macau has raised its base rate by 25 bps to 1.25 percent on March 16th, 2017, after the US Federal Reserve decided to hike the key rate by 25 bps to 0.75 percent-1 percent on March 15th. Since the Macanese pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar and the Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar, the movements of policy rates in Hong Kong and Macao should be basically consistent in order to maintain the effective operation of the linked exchange rate system.

The jobless rate remained at its highest level since September 2012, as total unemployed persons were unchanged at 7.9 thousand while employment rose 0.1 percent to 379.5 thousand. Employment gains were observed in hotels and similar activities (30.9 thousand from 30.4 thousand), wholesale & retail trade (47.4 thousand from 47.3 thousand) and construction (35.2 thousand from 35.0 thousand) while declined in gaming and junket (80.1 thousand from 81.3 thousand) and restaurant and similar activities (22.9 thousand from 24.8 thousand).

Macau's gross domestic product advanced by 7 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016, following an upwardly revised 4.4 percent expansion in the previous period, as total exports of services increased by 8.2 percent (from 2.6 percent in Q3), underpinned by the continued expansion in tourism and gaming services, and imports rose by 1.6 percent (from 6.3 percent). Meanwhile, exports of goods declined further by 21.2 percent (from -15.7 percent in Q3) and imports shrank 8 percent (from -8.7 percent). Domestic demand slipped slightly, due to a contraction in private consumption (-0.5 percent from 0.2 percent in Q3) while government spending showed no growth (from 0.1 percent) and fixed investment rose marginally (0.2 percent from 4 percent in Q3). For the whole year of 2016, the economy of Macau shrank by 2.1 percent year-on-year after a 21.5 percent drop in 2015.
