Macau Inflation Rate at 1.44 percent  
Consumer prices in Macau rose 1.44 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, compared to a 1.53 percent increase in November. Prices rose at a slower pace for food & non-alcoholic beverages (+1.85 percent from +2.09 percent in the prior month); transport (+6.69 percent from +6.70 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (+1.02 percent from +1.93 percent), health (+3.86 percent from +4.02 percent). Cost went up more than in a month earlier for: household goods & furnishings (+0.65 percent from +0.61 percent); clothing & footwear (+1.86 percent from +0.40 percent) while inflation remained steady for education (+7.38 percent). In contrast, cost fell for : housing & fuels (-1.45 percent from -1.36 percent); communication (-1.92 percent from -2.02 percent) and recreation and culture (-0.39 percent from -0.31 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.17 percent, after gaining 0.29 percent in November.

It was the largest deficit since December of 2015, as exports fell while imports rose. Year-on-year, sales declined by 8.1 percent to MOP 0.8 billion, led by garments, not knitted to crocheted (-39.1 percent), electronic components (-25.2 percent), textiles and garments (-20.3 percent), and machines, apparatus and part (-46.6 percent). In contrast, imports increased by 2.9 percent to MOP 6.82 billion, due to higher shipments of watches (+69.1 percent), beauty, cosmetic and skin-care (+31.5 percent), and handbags and wallets (+30.7 percent). Considering January to November 2016, sales dropped by 5.1 percent to MOP 9.3 billion while purchases declined by 16.6 percent to MOP 64.8 billion. That brought trade deficit of MOP 55.5 billion during the period.
