Macau Tourist Arrivals at 2495196.00  
Visitor arrivals in Macau fell 5.6 percent year-on-year to 2,495,196 in February of 2017, following a 17.6 percent increase in January. While overnight visitors went up by 3.6 percent, same-day visitors dropped by 13.2 percent. Visitors from China, that accounted for 66.7 percent of total visitors, declined by 7.5 percent (from 20.4 percent in the prior month) with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme decreasing by 11.9 percent.

Consumer prices in Macau rose 0.37 percent year-on-year in February of 2017, compared to a 1.76 percent increase in the prior month. It was the lowest inflation rate since January 2010, as prices went up at a slower pace for : food & non-alcoholic beverages (0.14 percent from 1.69 percent in the prior month), transport (6.97 percent from 8.12 percent), education (7.36 percent from 7.38 percent), and miscellaneous goods and services (1.02 percent from 1.84 percent). Prices increased at a faster pace for : household goods & furnishings (1.72 percent from 0.88 percent) and health (3.46 percent from 3.26 percent). In contrast, cost fell for: clothing & footwear (-0.28 percent from -0.88 percent), communication (-1.65 percent from -1.73 percent), and recreation & culture (-8.26 percent from 9.03 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices decreased 0.42 percent, after gaining 0.36 percent in January.

The Central Bank of Macau has raised its base rate by 25 bps to 1.25 percent on March 16th, 2017, after the US Federal Reserve decided to hike the key rate by 25 bps to 0.75 percent-1 percent on March 15th. Since the Macanese pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar and the Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar, the movements of policy rates in Hong Kong and Macao should be basically consistent in order to maintain the effective operation of the linked exchange rate system.

It was the highest jobless rate since September 2012 as unemployed persons rose to 7.9 thousand from 7.6 thousand in the previous period. Employment fell 0.8 percent to 381.9 thousand (385 thousand in the previous period). It fell in construction (35.2 thousand from 37.2 thousand), hotels and similar activities (29.9 thousand from 30.2 thousand), restaurant and similar activities (24.8 thousand from 27 thousand) while gains occurred in gaming and junket (82.6 thousand from 79.6 thousand) and wholesale and retail trade (47.4 thousand from 46.3 thousand).

Retail sales in Macau slightly rose 0.1 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016, following a downwardly revised 5.3 percent drop in the previous period. It was the first increase after nine consecutive quarters of decline in retail sales volume, driven by higher sales of goods in department stores (5.9 percent vs -4.6 percent in Q3), automotive fuels (11.6 percent vs 17.6 percent); cosmetics and sanitary articles (8.5 percent vs 6.4 percent); and leather goods (27.4 percent vs 32 percent). In contrast, sales dropped for watches, clocks and jewelry (-6.2 percent vs -24.6 percent in Q3); household appliances (-4.7 percent vs -9.5 percent); motor vehicles (-46.6 percent vs -42.2 percent); communication equipment (-6.6 percent vs -1.9 percent) and pharmaceutical goods (-18.3 percent vs 3.4 percent).

Macau GDP Annual Growth Rate at 7.00 percent  
Macau's gross domestic product advanced by 7 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016, following an upwardly revised 4.4 percent expansion in the previous period, as total exports of services increased by 8.2 percent (from 2.6 percent in Q3), underpinned by the continued expansion in tourism and gaming services, and imports rose by 1.6 percent (from 6.3 percent). Meanwhile, exports of goods declined further by 21.2 percent (from -15.7 percent in Q3) and imports shrank 8 percent (from -8.7 percent). Domestic demand slipped slightly, due to a contraction in private consumption (-0.5 percent from 0.2 percent in Q3) while government spending showed no growth (from 0.1 percent) and fixed investment rose marginally (0.2 percent from 4 percent in Q3). For the whole year of 2016, the economy of Macau shrank by 2.1 percent year-on-year after a 21.5 percent drop in 2015.
