Malta Inflation Rate at 1.40 percent  
Consumer prices in Malta increased 1.4 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a 1 percent rise in the previous month. It is the highest inflation rate since October 2015, as prices went up at a faster pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (5.2 percent vs 3.5 percent in December), transport (0.3 percent vs -0.3 percent), furniture and household equipment (4.9 percent vs 3.8 percent), clothing and footwear (2 percent vs -2.8 percent), health (1.6 percent vs 1.4 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (0.8 percent vs 0.5 percent). Meanwhile, cost fell for restaurants and hotels (-0.1 percent vs 2.1 percent) but less for recreation and culture (-1.4 percent vs -3.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices decreased 1.1 percent, after being flat in December.

Industrial production in Malta surged 4.7 percent year-on-year in December of 2016, following an upwardly revised 0.4 percent rise in the prior month. It is the biggest gain since December of 2015, driven by increases in intermediate goods (11.5 percent vs 7.7 percent in November) and energy (2.8 percent vs 3.3 percent). In addition, production rebounded for capital goods (5.9 percent vs -3.3 percent) and consumer durable goods (1.7 percent vs -9.9 percent). Meantime, consumer goods fell less (-3.1 percent vs -4.6 percent), namely non-durable goods (-3.7 percent vs -4 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output went up 2.4 percent compared to an upwardly revised 3 percent rise in November.

Considering full 2016, the trade deficit widened by 8 percent to €2,794.3 million compared to 2015 as exports rose 3.3 percent to €3,644.9 million while imports increased 5.3 percent to €6,439.2 million.
