Malta's trade deficit increased to EUR 366.6 million in January of 2017, compared to a EUR 160.4 million shortfall a year earlier, as imports rose more than exports. Imports jumped 65.3 percent led by mineral fuels, lubricants and related products (166 percent to EUR 236.6 million) and machinery and transport equipment (59 percent to EUR 214.2 million). Exports increased at a slower 13.9 percent, mainly driven by mineral fuels, lubricants and related products (102 percent to EUR 79.9 million). Main export partners were Germany (13 percent of total exports), France (7.8 percent), the United States (5.9 percent) and Italy (5.6 percent). Main import partners were Singapore (14.3 percent), Italy (13.4 percent of total imports), Canada (8.5 percent).Spain (5.4 percent), Germany (4.9 percent) and United Kingdom (4.8 percent).

Industrial production in Malta jumped 4.8 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, following a downwardly revised 2.9 percent rise in the previous month. It is the biggest gain since December of 2015, as intermediate goods advanced 13.7 percent (from 9 percent in December) and energy jumped 9 percent (from 2.8 percent). In addition, production rebounded for consumer goods (1 percent vs -7.5 percent) led by non-durable goods (1.9 percent vs -8.1 percent). By contrast, capital goods plunged (-2.6 percent vs 9.1 percent) and consumer durable goods fell further (-5.2 percent vs -3.4 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output declined 1.5 percent compared to a downwardly revised 1.7 percent rise in December.

The Maltese economy advanced 5.1 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016, following an upwardly revised 4.5 percent expansion in the previous period. It is the strongest growth rate in three quarters, as household expenditure increased (4 percent vs 1.2 percent in Q3) and gross fixed capital formation rebounded (2.4 percent vs -18.9 percent in Q3). In contrast, government spending tumbled (-15.7 percent vs -4.3 percent in Q3). Exports jumped 8.6 percent (from 2.6 percent in Q3) and imports recovered (3.8 percent vs -5.2 percent). Considering 2016, the Maltese economy expanded 5 percent compared to a 7.4 percent growth in 2015.
