Consumer prices in Finland rose 0.8 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, easing from an 1 percent gain in the previous month. Upward pressure came mainly from: Housing and utilities (1.7 percent from 1.5 percent); transport (3.7 percent from 2.4 percent); restaurants and hotels (1.4 percent from 1.2 percent); and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (1 percent from 0.6 percent). By contrast, a sharp drop in cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages (-2.4 percent from -0.6 percent in December) and recreation and culture (-1.2 percent from -0.7 percent) weighed on inflation. On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined 0.6 percent, after gaining 0.2 percent in the prior month.

It was the first shortfall since July, as goods account posted a 305 EUR million deficit, swinging from a 24 EUR million surplus in December 2015. Services account deficit came in at 122 EUR million, narrowing from a 169 EUR million deficit. Secondary income deficit stood at 141 EUR million, unchanged from the previous period. Meanwhile, Primary income surplus were at 271 EUR million, down from 397 EUR million surplus in December the preceding year. For full 2016, current account deficit came in at 1,788 EUR million, widening from a 872 EUR million gap in 2015.

Finland reported a EUR 530 million trade deficit in December of 2016, compared to a EUR 262 million gap in the same month of the preceding year. It was the largest deficit since December 2013 as exports decreased while imports increased, preliminary estimates showed. Year-on-year, sales fell 5 percent to EUR 4.4 billion. While sales to countries outside the EU remained unchanged from the previous year, those from EU countries dropped by 8 percent. Imports went up 1 percent to EUR 4.9 billion. While imports from outside the EU countries increased by 16 percent, those from EU countries fell 7 percent. From January to December, outbound shipments declined by 4.0 percent while imports from the EU countries remained at the previous year’s level, while imports from outside the EU countries increased by 1 percent. That brought a trade gap of EUR 2.9 billion during the period, widening sharply from a EUR 613 million deficit in the same period a year before.

It was the fourth straight month of increase but the weakest growth since September, as output rose at a slower pace for manufacturing (1.5 percent from 3.6 percent), and mining and quarrying (3.4 percent from 25.3 percent). In contrast output fell for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-0.5 percent from 9.7 percent) and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (-6.1 percent from -8.8 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production decreased by 0.7 percent, after increasing by 0.3 percent in the prior month.
