United States Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index  1993-2017 | Data | Chart

The Manufacturing Activity Index in the US fifth district including the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and most of West Virginia fell to 1 in May of 2017 from 20 in the previous month, and below market expectations of 15. It was the lowest reading since October last year, driven by a notable decrease in the index for shipments (-2 from 25 in April) and new orders (0 from 26). The index for employment was relatively flat (6 from 5) while the majority of firms reported a decline in the average workweek and higher wages. Looking six months ahead, manufacturing executives remained generally optimistic, although the only index to increase was expected capital expenditures. Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index in the United States averaged 1.72 Index Points from 1993 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 26 Index Points in April of 2010 and a record low of -43 Index Points in February of 2009.

The Richmond Manufacturing Index measures the conditions of the manufacturing sector for the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and most of West Virginia. The index is derived from a survey of 190 manufacturing plants and based on three individual index with the following weights: Shipments (33 percent), New Orders (40 percent) and Employment (27 percent). The index can range between +100 and -100; a reading above zero indicates expansion, while below zero suggests a contraction.
