A year earlier, the unemployment rate was higher at 3.6 percent.
The number of unemployed persons fell by 60 thousand or 2.6 percent from the previous year to 2.27 million. Employment went up by 370 thousand or 0.6 percent year-on-year to 64.39 million.
The labour force participation rate increased by 0.3 percent to 60.2 percent.
The jobs-to-applicants ratio was 1.24 percent, up from 1.23 percent in August, remaining at the highest since January 1992.
